n H. E. Turnbulll, who formerly ran a general store at the corner of West Eleventh and Pine Streets, will break ground for a new two-story cement block at the corner of Peninsula and East Front Streets where he will open a large general store. The construction of the building will begin at once so as to be ready for occupancy by spring. The building will be modern in every way and will have a suite of flats on the second floor.
n A very pleasant day was spent last Thursday with Mrs. J. Hoagland, when the Helping Hand society gathered at her home to help her celebrate her sixty-fifth birthday. A nice dinner was served to the nine members and three visitors who were present.
n One of the most enjoyable events of the season in G. A. R. and W. R. C. circles was Tuesday evening when a large company of the Post members and ladies met at the assembly rooms in the courthouse for a potluck supper and social evening. After supper, a very spirited talk was given by Supt. L. L. Tyler followed by a reading, a recitation and several organ selections by members of the group.
n Another one of the neighbors in the Hillside Grove area, Joe Yagle and family, have sold their farm to Mr. Champney of Acme and will leave on Wednesday for Kingsley where they will spend a short time. They have not yet decided where they will make their new home.
n Joe Weldon, a resident of East Paradise and who has been up in the northwest for the past year, returned last Saturday. He says the northwest is a fine country, but Michigan still has its attractions for Joe, it seems.
n At the meeting of Grand Traverse Grange to be held next Saturday, the question of presenting a formal invitation to the State Horticultural society to meet here next year, will be taken up and discussed. The Grange of this county feel that this is the logical point for holding the next annual meeting as it is located in the center of the greatest fruit belt of the state.
n There was quite a little excitement in the little town of Crescent last week when A. J. White's barn, used by Mr. Misner, caught fire in some way. With the help of the men and hose at the mill, the fire was put out after the barn was burned quite badly.
n Advice on deportment. Never hazard taking part in a quadrille, unless you know how to dance tolerably.
n Medical advice of a century ago. Those who suffer from rheumatism should avoid eating much meat. They should drink plenty of water.

n Frank Smith, the peninsula fruit grower, has succeeded in extending the market for Grand Traverse apples beyond the border of this country, having sold two carloads of the fruit in Winnipeg, Manitoba. There is no fruit grown in that part and having heard of the fame of the apples of this area, a sale was readily affected.
n C. L. Walker and son, Forest G. of Detroit, returned home this morning from an extending trip in this vicinity. While in Traverse City they made several business calls and were entertained at a number of social events.
n Mrs. E. Weaver, whose home is in Kingsley, passed through the city this morning on her return home from Scotts Bluff, Nebraska where she has been for the past two years. She is looking forward to seeing her old friends once again as well as the many relatives in the Kingsley area.
n Harry Williams, an offender from Walton, appeared before Judge Walker of the juvenile court Friday on a charge of taking good from the G. R. & I. depot at Walton. He admitted the charge and was released as a ward of the court upon suspended sentence. For some time goods have been disappearing from the cars and depot and Detectives Kirby and Smith have been busy ferreting out the cause of the losses and succeeded in weaving a net around several boys.

The Oak Park Mothers' club held an interesting meeting Tuesday afternoon in the school at which there was a large number of members and friends present.
