Machine malfunction delays Whitewater count

TRAVERSE CITY -- A voting machine malfunction in Whitewater Township delayed the counting of ballots to determine the winner of a write-in contest for township trustee.

Township Clerk Carol Hockin said a voting machine did not count all the ballots in one of two precincts. As a result, poll workers have to match ballots to the poll book, then run the count again before they could even begin counting write-in votes.

"We are going to be here until the wee hours of the morning," Hockin said Tuesday evening.

Voters were asked to choose between Arnell Boyd, 59, a private property rights advocate, and Karen Ferguson, 53, an attorney who wants to protect the township's rural character. The winner will fill the final year of a four-year term.
