Top 10: Townsend goes back-to-back

Maryland moves star another step closer to dream of going pro

TRAVERSE CITY -- There can't be much more room in Casey Townsend's personal trophy case.

The Traverse City West soccer star is accumulating awards at an astonishing rate, garnering another seemingly each week.

When being selected to the Parade All-America team is old hat and almost a given again this spring, that happens.

Townsend won his second Mr. Soccer award this year, something that had never happened in before in Michigan soccer history. In fact, it hadn't happened in any Michigan prep sport other than golf or cross country.

In the Townsend house, there's a room full of plaques, certificates, trophies, medals. The list goes on and on.

This year, the room's population has expanded as he's also won High School All-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for the second time. He's also up for the Gatorade national Player of the Year award and was picked all-state, league MVP and numerous other laurels.

"We've got a room for all that stuff," Townsend said. "My mom likes to frame it all. It takes up a room."

"They would have to add on to their house to put them all up," West boys soccer coach Jason Carmien said. "I've started putting some of his stuff up in my classroom."

Townsend winning back-to-back Mr. Soccer awards was chosen as No. 5 in the Record-Eagle's list of the top 10 local sports stories of the year.

The Titans standout has averaged over a goal a game over his four-year varsity career. His 105 carer goals rank him 15th on the state's all-time list, but only Woodhaven's Joe Evans ranks higher among Class A/Division 1 players. Townsend is also 26th all-time in assists with 47 and ninth in points with 152.

In a few weeks, Townsend will head off to Maryland to start his collegiate playing career.

Graduating from TC West a semester early will allow him to take a few classes and train with his future Terrapins teammates during the spring exhibition season.

Maryland will also provide Townsend -- who said a goal of his is to play professionally -- with some rather unique experiences.

First, the team trains in the spring with D.C. United, which travels up from Washington to use the Terrapins' indoor practice facility.

Second, the school has a history of producing MLS players, having had 28 of its recent alumni play in the league, including three taken in the draft last January.

Two of those 28 were taken No. 1 overall in the league's draft, including junior midfielder Maurice Edu in last January's MLS SuperDraft.

Sophomore goaltender Chris Seitz was chosen No. 4 overall, marking just the fourth time in MLS SuperDraft history that two players from the same school were selected in the top five. Senior A.J. Godbolt was later taken in the supplemental draft.

"Their track record for producing (MLS) players is very, very good," Carmien said. "Hopefully, Casey can add to that."

In the last six years, Maryland has won a national title, played in the semifinals three times and made two other trips to the sweet 16.

The Terps have locked up three of the top 10 recruits in the country, including Townsend, who is ranked No. 6 nationally by Rise Magazine, a publication covering primarily high school sports. Townsend is up for Rise's player of the year award.

Make more room.
