Stupak, Camp claim victory

DETROIT (AP) -- Democrat Gary Peters declared victory Tuesday in an Oakland County congressional district, building a solid lead against Republican Rep. Joe Knollenberg with the help of Barack Obama's win in Michigan.

In a southern Michigan district, Republican Rep. Tim Walberg was locked in a tight re-election contest against Democrat Mark Schauer, the Democratic leader in the state senate. With two-thirds of precincts reporting, Walberg held a slim 1,691-vote lead.

Peters, flanked by his family, said he would move into Congress as "part of a bigger movement across America that elected Barack Obama president."

"We are going to be able to take America back," Peters told cheering supporters.

In other Michigan congressional races:

-- 1st District: Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak of Menominee defeated GOP state Rep. Tom Casperson of Escanaba, and three others.

-- 4th District: Rep. Dave Camp, R-Midland, defeated Democrat Andrew Concannon, and two others.
