11:12 am: Historic barn spared in blaze

BY ALEX PIAZZA

EMPIRE — Officials are looking into what caused a fire that destroyed a wood shed adjacent to a historic barn in northern Benzie County.

A shed that lies next to a historic barn on a Centennial Farm on East Manning Road off M-22 near Empire burned to the ground Tuesday afternoon.

“The only logical thing would be the wood stove,” said owner Mike Bolton. “We’ve used it for years and had no issues.”

Nobody was injured, but Bolton’s 1962 Cadillac was destroyed. Bolton said the fire did not seriously damage adjacent buildings.

Firefighters fought the blaze for more than three hours, said Homestead Township Fire Chief Frank Walterhouse.
