Record-Eagle endorses 3 for U.S. Congress

In what is shaping up to be one of the closest races in the history of Michigan's 1st Congressional District, we recommend Democrat Gary McDowell.

The Rudyard state representative said he "hates political rancor" and promises to work across party lines to "get this government back on track."

McDowell supports health reform and says that "to go back to where we were" is "just not sustainable."

He says opponent Dan Benishek is "totally out of the mainstream," particularly his positions on Social Security and Medicare.

In the 2nd District we recommend former state Rep. Bill Huizenga, a Republican from Zeeland, who has put together a solid legislative career and promises to work on the debt and jobs. On Obamacare, Huizenga says "We need to repeal it but also have to replace it," adding that the "status quo is not acceptable. He says his knowledge of the district and district issues — including clean water, invasive species and air pollution from across Lake Michigan — will help him represent the region.

In the 4th Congressional District we recommend Republican Dave Camp, who has established himself as a knowledgeable senior leader since first being elected in 1990. He is ranking member of the Ways and Means Committee and if the Republicans take over the House, will likely become chairman. He wants to repeal Obamacare, a balanced budget amendment and no new taxes.
