Incumbent officials win in Leelanau

TRAVERSE CITY — Incumbent commissioners in Leelanau County easily turned back election challenges.

Four sitting board members won new two-year terms Tuesday, while Commissioner Mary Tonnenberger waged a write-in campaign in an effort to reverse her primary election loss to Republican Tom VanPelt in District 1 in Leelanau Township. Results in the VanPelt-Tonnenberger race weren't available late Tuesday.

Four-term Commissioner Richard Schmuckal, of Suttons Bay, defeated Democrat Jason Harrall in District 3 that includes Bingham and Suttons Bay townships. The District 5 race went to three-term incumbent David Shiflett, of Leland, over challenger Karen Zemaitis, while David Marshall, of Glen Arbor, turned back challenger Karen Paulus in District 6, composed of Cleveland, Empire and Glen Arbor townships.

Nine-term Commissioner Melinda Lautner, of Cedar, defeated Karl Dungjen in District 7 that includes Kasson and Solon townships.
