DETROIT — Former state Rep. Bill Huizenga (HY'-zuhn-guh) of Zeeland is the winner in the 3rd District race and will slide into the open congressional seat left by Huizenga's former boss and fellow Republican Pete Hoekstra (HUK'-struh).
With 33 percent of precincts reporting in the conservative western Michigan district, Huizenga had 67 percent of the vote to 29.4 percent for Democrat Fred Johnson, a Hope College history professor.
The 41-year-old Huizenga served as Hoekstra's district director in the late 1990s and early 2000s before serving three terms in the state House.
