Film Festival Outtakes: 07/28/2010

Ready to be IN the movies instead of watching them? A casting call will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Traverse Area District Library. The movie, "The Sleeping Bear Movie," will film locally beginning in August. The movie tells the story of Michael Bradley Jr., a 20-something, recently fired construction worker from Detroit who is trying to sell his deceased father's house. Interested actors may contact Richard Cameron White, who is making his directorial debut, at 342-9566 or go to www.thesleepingbearmovie.com.

One of the movies at this year's festival, "11/4/08," documents Election Day 2008. Jeff Deutchman, director, tweeted about a local submission added to the film's website, www.11-4-08.com. The film was made by Kat and Frank Lepera in Traverse City and features election workers, volunteers and voters.

Volunteers saw the Swiss film, "Will You Marry Us?" during the volunteer screening Monday.

Additional screenings were announced Tuesday. "Restrepo," today, 6 p.m., City Opera House; "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil," Thursday, midnight, Old Town Playhouse; "The Concert," Friday, 9 p.m., Old Town Playhouse.

Michael Moore, founder of the film festival, told volunteers Monday that if the Traverse City Area Public Schools honored the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, he would raise the money to put in all new seats at Lars Hockstad Auditorium.

Sponsors saw "Castaway on the Moon," a Korean film, during the Founders Party Sunday. The party following the movie was held at Ciccone Vineyards, owned by Madonna's father, Tony Ciccone. When introducing the movie, Michael Moore said "Castaway" director Lee Hae-joon's first movie was "Like a Virgin." "Since we're going to Ciccones', it seemed like nice symmetry," Moore said.

The film festival founders — Moore, Doug Stanton and John Robert Williams — kicked off a fund drive to replace the aging red tiles on the front of the State Theatre. They said $1,000 will buy a tile with your name on it. Pledge cards will be available during the festival, they said.

Moore said sponsorships of this year's film festival hit $250,000 this year, a 25 percent increase over last year. He said there are 54 new sponsors and it was the fastest sellout of sponsorships yet.

• • •

Organizers reiterate that the festival is not sold out. "It's never sold out," Moore said. "We're far above where we were last year at this time," he said, but "we're literally able to sit the standby lines." There's a "95 percent chance" you can get into any movie, he said.

Open Space fun before the free movies each night promises to be raucous. There will be a giant whale set up before "Finding Nemo" tonight; Beatles karaoke before "Help!" Thursday; motorcycle chases before "Raising Arizona" Friday; Indy and his dad and a replica car from "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" Saturday; and Mary and Bert flying over the crowd for "Mary Poppins" Sunday. Fun begins at 7 p.m.; movies will start around 9:45 p.m.
