Winners return to Golden Mile

TRAVERSE CITY — Saturday's Golden Mile will have a familiar look.

Several runners are returning to Traverse City for the elite race, including a pair of former champions.

"It should be a strong field," race co-director Eric Houghton said.

Currently, the field looks to have 10 men and eight females for Saturday's one-mile downtown loop.

In the men's field, 2010 champion Moses Waweru is back, along with teammates Richard Kandie and Festus Kigen. The three Kenyans are part of the Duma Runners based out of Minneapolis.

Australian native Ryan Foster will also be in the field. The Penn State grad is a Big Ten champion and an All-American, on top of running a 3 minute, 39 second 1500 last weekend.

Jackson native Daniel Clark, as well as Oakland University grad Jason Bigelow and Saginaw Valley State alum Tony Filipek highlight the Michigan runners in the field while Wan Carillo and James O'Brien will compete from the Indianapolis Invaders Track Club.

In the women's competition, 2009 Golden Mile champion Andrea Parker is back. She's a native of Canada and a former University of Michigan runner.

Sarah Boyle and Danielle Quisenberry are also back after competing in last year's event.

Two distance runners will look to continue their recent success in a sprint race.

Molly Pritz won this year's 5/3 River Run in Grand Rapids and became the national champion in the 25K in the process. She's in the field, along with Katie Jazwinski, a Grand Rapids native, former U-M runner and the current Dexter High School coach. Jazwinski won last year's Grand Rapids Marathon.

Both races will start at Running Fit, run down Front Street, loop around State Street and eventually end at just past the intersection of Front and Union Streets — at the same finish line as the Cherry Festival's races.

Start time for the women's race is 10:15 a.m. with the men running at 10:30 a.m.

Houghton was happy to add host families this year for some of the elite athletes.

"We had a number of families be host families," he said. "Really, this is a great community event."
