Author Elmore Leonard at Cherry Festival

Event includes picnic and book

TRAVERSE CITY — Elmore Leonard will be at the National Cherry Festival Saturday, July 2.

Leonard, the author of 45 books and numerous screenplays, is a guest of the National Writers Series.

Many of Leonard's books have been adapted into movies, including "Get Shorty," "Out of Sight" and "Rum Punch," which became Quentin Tarantino's "Jackie Brown." According to the Detroit News, Leonard currently is adapting one of his short stories, "The Tonto Woman," into a novel. The title character is captured by Apaches and released nine years later to a husband who doesn't want her.

One of Leonard's most popular characters, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, is the basis of "Justified," an FX series in its third season.

National Writers Series co-founder Doug Stanton will talk with Leonard onstage about his life and work. Tickets to the event, which are $39.95 and $49.95, include a picnic with food from the Boathouse Restaurant and wine from Bowers Harbor Yineyard. Everyone also will get a book written by Leonard. Music before the talk will be by Ron Getz. The event will be held in the Open Space.

Tickets for reserved seats for the 6 p.m. event are available www.cherryfestival.org.
