TRAVERSE CITY — Voters in Traverse City overwhelmingly supported an ordinance that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation.
By a nearly two-to-one margin, the city voted 2,818 to 1,661 to keep the ordinance.
Tuesday’s vote comes more than a year after Traverse City commissioners adopted the measure to prevent discrimination against gays in employment, housing and other areas. A vocal group of opponents collected signatures to force the referendum, arguing that it singles out a group for special treatment.
