'Yes' votes pile up big lead in anti-discrimination measure

TRAVERSE CITY — Early results show voters in Traverse City support an ordinance that prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Votes to keep the controversial measure on the books lead “no” votes 2,080 to 1,204 as of 8:45 p.m. Approximately 1,500 absentee ballots remain uncounted, along with results from one small precinct in Leelanau County.

Tuesday’s vote comes more than a year after Traverse City adopted the measure to prevent discrimination against gays in employment, housing and other areas. A vocal group of opponents collected signatures to force the referendum, arguing that it singles out a group for special treatment.

Erin Bernhard disagreed with that argument and voted “yes” Tuesday at the History Center on Sixth Street to keep the ordinance.

“I sincerely believe in the rights of all people,” she said. “It doesn’t give special rights, it gives equal rights. That’s the bottom line.”
