Three-way race for NMC trustees still open

Incumbent Doug Bishop leads with 37% of the vote

TRAVERSE CITY — A three-way race for two seats on the Northwestern College Board was too close to call at press time.

Incumbent Doug Bishop was the lead vote-getter with 37 percent of the vote. Challenger Kennard Weaver was slightly ahead of incumbent Walter Jay Hooper, but with numerous precincts yet to report.

The top two vote-getters will win six-year terms on the NMC board.

Bishop credited his stronger lead to people being "generally satisfied and pleased with the way the college is being run."

This is the second time Weaver, a retired attorney, has run for the board.

Bishop, a partner at the law firm Bishop & Heintz PC in Traverse City, was appointed to the board in 2006 and elected to a six-year term that same year.

Hooper, a partner in the insurance sales firm Great Northern Benefits, has served 12 years on the NMC board and is seeking a third term. He could not be reached for comment.
