TRAVERSE CITY — The second time for Kennard Weaver was the charm.
Weaver, a retired attorney, was unable to unseat two incumbents in a 2010 bid to become a trustee on the Northwestern Michigan College board. This year, however, he squeaked by incumbent Walter "Jay" Hooper and landed one of two open seats.
Incumbent Doug Bishop claimed the other open spot. Bishop was the lead vote-getter with 18,345 votes and retains a seat he's held since 2006.
Percentage-wise, Bishop led with 37.5 percent of the vote, followed by Weaver, 31 percent, and Hooper, 30.5 percent.
Weaver said he intends to bring new ideas to the board, such as reaching out to area businesses and offering four-year college degrees in a wide range of programs.
Bishop said the college's main challenge is to continue delivering quality education at an affordable price. He favors four-year degrees in culinary, maritime and nursing but doesn't want NMC to become a four-year college.
Bishop is a partner at the law firm Bishop & Heintz PC in Traverse City.
Hooper, a partner in the insurance sales firm Great Northern Benefits, served 12 years on the NMC board. He could not be reached for comment.
