Two Dems run for 104th state House seat

TRAVERSE CITY — Democrats will battle it out in Grand Traverse County to take on a Republican for the 104th state House District, one of the few surprise filings for the region's state and Congressional races

Democrat Betsy Coffia joined the field to take on Joseph Sloan in the Aug. 7 Democratic primary while county Commissioner Jason Gillman will battle incumbent state Rep. Wayne Schmidt among the Republicans.

Former Manistee County Commissioner Allen O'Shea and Grand Traverse Band tribal Chairman Derek Bailey is another primary battle. The winner will take on Republican incumbent Ray Franz to represent the 101st House District that includes Leelanau, Benzie, and Manistee counties.

Wexford County, part of the 102nd House District, features Democrats George Huffman III and Brenden Maturen in the primary to see who faces Republican incumbent Phil Potvin in November.

Antrim County, part of the 105th House district, has no primary matchup. Incumbent Republican Greg MacMaster will face Democrat Willim Wieske in November.

Voters will also have to wait until the November election for a rematch in the redrawn 1st Congressional District between first-term Republican Dan Benishek and Democrat Gary McDowell. Voters in Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Kalkaska, Benzie and Manistee counties missed the 2010 match because they were part of other Congressional districts.
