Israel will repeat as Kalkaska sheriff

KALKASKA — Dave Israel will have another term as Kalkaska County sheriff.

Israel, a Democrat who first won election in 2008, easily fended off Republican challenger Bruce Soloway. He had a substantial lead on Soloway with two-thirds of the county’s townships reporting.

“I feel good. It’s a vote of confidence, a vote of support for Abe and I,” Israel said, referring to his undersheriff, Abe DeVol. “I feel blessed.”

Soloway expected more support from Republican voters throughout the county.

“All the indications we had earlier is that there is a 2-to-1 margin of Republicans here, but maybe our numbers were wrong,” he said.

Israel, who recently had his pay cut by the county board, believes residents rewarded him with a second term because they were pleased with his first stint.

“In my last four years of service, Abe and I, we’ve done everything possible to serve and protect,” he said. “There’s been no scandals, no major complaints. We’ve done a good job.”

Kalkaska County will have a new prosecutor, and he’ll be the youngest in the state. Republican Mike Perreault, who now serves as acting prosecutor, handily beat independent Scott Isles. Perreault, 28, served as an assistant prosecutor under former prosecutor Brian Donnelly, who died in January. He will be appointed to the position Wednesday, he said.

“Praise God,” he said. “Hopefully, I’ll have the ability and the wisdom to serve the people of Kalkaska County.”
