TRAVERSE CITY -- Voters defeated a pair of millage requests to fix local roads in Acme and East Bay townships.

East Bay voters overwhelmingly rejected the measure, with 1,539 against the millage and 717 in favor.

Acme Township voters defeated a millage proposal there by a 709 to 535 tally.

Both proposed road millages were for one mill at five years to go on the 2009 winter tax bills. The millage would have raised an estimated $500,000 in its first year for East Bay Township and $317,000 in Acme Township.

Labor, business are backing Meijer in probe

Three of the state's heaviest political hitters -- representatives of labor and business -- are aligned against Grand Traverse County's prosecutor and his criminal probe of Meijer Inc. for campaign finance violations. The Michigan Chamber of Commerce, the Michigan Education Association, and the Michigan Teamsters filed a joint motion with the Michigan Supreme Court.
