Marker tapped for Elk Rapids post
ELK RAPIDS -- Sheila Marker has been named executive director of the Elk Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber board announced Marker's appointment last week. She's worked as an office assistant for the chamber for the past 17 months, and was named interim director in March.
Marker is an Elk Rapids native and ran a local business for several years before going to work for the chamber. She said her goals "are to work closely with area businesses and to promote economic growth in the village and township as well as building a stronger foundation for the chamber."
Trucking rules program is set
TRAVERSE CITY -- A program on trucking rules impacting nursery, plant and landscaping companies will be held Dec. 8 at Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City.
The event is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and sponsored by the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association. Ron Edwards of the Michigan Center for Truck Safety will discuss trucking law and regulations for Michigan's nursery and landscaping companies.
The cost is $30 for association members and $40 for non-members. Registration is available through Beth Hooley at 1-800-879-6652. Registration forms also are available online at www.mnla.org
Wind turbine issues to be discussed
TRAVERSE CITY -- A hearing for the public to comment on setback, noise and other wind turbine issues associated with the final report of the Michigan Wind Energy Resource Zone Board is set for Nov. 23.
The hearing of the Michigan Public Service Commission will begin at 11 a.m. in Lansing, with satellite locations set up in Traverse City and Bad Axe. The Traverse City site will be in rooms 215/217 of the University Center at Northwestern Michigan College's Boardman Lake campus located at 2200 Dendrinos Drive.
Written and electronic comments will be accepted by the MPSC until Dec. 11 at 5 p.m. Written comments may also be submitted at the public hearing. The Wind Energy Resource Zone Board's final report is available on the Web at michigan.gov/windboard.
2-1-1 service provider designated
MANISTEE -- The state Public Service Commission formally designated a 2-1-1 service provider for seven local telephone exchanges in Manistee and Benzie counties.
Community Access Line of the Lakeshore (CALL) Inc. was approved by the MPSC Thursday to provide 2-1-1 service in the Manistee area, where callers can get information on community resource assistance and other referral information.
CALL will provide around-the-clock 2-1-1 service for telephone exchanges of Bear Lake, Brethren, Copemish-Thompsonville, Dublin, Kaleva, Onekama and Wellston.
CALL is based in Muskegon Heights and also provides 2-1-1 service in Mason, Muskegon, Ottawa and Oceana counties.
