The Ghering children -- Eugene Jr. in Army cap, Nancy and Tom -- stand outside their aunt-s Madison Street house in Traverse City during World War II. The stars on the door were blue and signified that three family members were in the war. One star was replaced with a gold star when Bill Ghering was killed in France in 1944.
