Bear takes city tour

TRAVERSE CITY — Authorities caged a black bear found in a city neighborhood today after they shot it with tranquilizer darts.

Locals spotted a 200-pound male black bear at 3:40 a.m. Wednesday, and hours later, the bear climbed a tree on Plainview Road in Traverse City. The bear remained in the tree for more than three hours before authorities shot it with tranquilizer darts.

The bear fell to the ground and ran to a nearby yard, where the tranquilizer kicked in. Authorities placed the bear in a cage, and plan to release it back into the wild.

Hundreds of locals crowded the area around the tree, with cameras ready to document the event.
