Bus-car accident causes chain reaction

TRAVERSE CITY — A Bay Area Transportation Authority Bus rear-ended a car on busy Division Street and caused a chain reaction of accidents that put one woman in the hospital.

The Traverse City Police Department responded Monday shortly after 4 p.m. to a reported accident on Division Street south of 13th Street. Police said a 71-year-old Interlochen man driving a BATA bus with one passenger was headed south in the right lane on Division Street when he struck a stopped vehicle driven by a 33-year-old woman from Chicago.

The collision pushed the woman’s vehicle into a second car driven by a 45-year-old Traverse City woman, which then collided with third vehicle driven by a 60-year-old Traverse City woman. The third car was pushed into the oncoming lanes and into the path of a northbound car that left the road and hit a fence.

The 60-year-old woman was taken to Munson Medical Center. Her condition is not known.

The BATA driver was cited for a violation of basic speed law.
