Record-Eagle.com earns national honors

Cited for blogs, coverage of Cherry Festival

TRAVERSE CITY — The Record-Eagle's website landed several awards in a national contest sponsored by Suburban Newspapers of America.

The website took first place in the "Best Blog Initiative" category for what the judges described as "timely, fresh, interesting blogs with a nice mix of contributions by individuals, religion writers, a foodie, a poetry contributor and more."

The blogs, written by community and staff members, can be read at Record-Eagle.com/blogs.

The website placed as a runner-up for "Best Local Community Website," only the second time in five years the website has not won the contest's top honor. Sites are judged on overall excellence, including design, ease of navigation, content, reader interactivity, innovation and advertising, according to SNA.

The Record-Eagle also was recognized as a runner-up in the "Best Local Community Initiative" category for coverage of the 2010 National Cherry Festival.

"How can you go wrong with cherries?" the judges wrote. "This is terrific coverage of the National Cherry Festival, and it wins in large part on the strength of writing by Art Bukowski, including the fun and funny 'Eat, reporter, eat, eat, eat!'"

The Record-Eagle competed in Class B of SNA's Local Community Website Contest, for daily newspapers with circulations up to 40,000.
