Record-Eagle brings home six AP honors

Three first places, two second places, one third place

TRAVERSE CITY -- Record-Eagle staffers won six awards -- including three first-place honors -- in the 2009 Michigan AP Editorial Association newswriting, newsphoto, graphics and Web site contest.

Awards announced last week were for journalism produced during the 2009 calendar year. Record-Eagle winners were in the Division II category for newspapers with 15,001 to 50,000 circulation.

Winners include:

n 1st Place, Sustained Coverage of a Single News Event: lead reporter Brian McGillivary and business editor Bill O'Brien for coverage of Grand Traverse County's financially troubled septage treatment plant.

n 1st Place, Public Service: associate editor Loraine Anderson for coverage of the Record Eagle's 150th Anniversary.

n 1st Place, Enterprise Reporting, former Record-Eagle reporter Melissa Domsic for coverage of problems at Tendercare, a Traverse City nursing home.

n 2nd Place, Sustained Coverage of a Single Sports Event: sports editor Dennis Chase and reporter Mike Eckert, for coverage of St. Francis' football championship.

n 2nd Place, News Column: community editor Garret Leiva, for a column on his sister's death.

n 3rd Place, Features: reporter Lindsay VanHulle, for a story on local author Doug Stanton upon the release of his latest book "Horse Soldiers."
