Bilinski leads TC West to sweep

MANTON -- Lauren Bilinski had a big day as Traverse City West opened the season with a 2-1, 1-0 sweep at Manton on Tuesday.

Bilinski had both game-winning RBIs and also pitched the win in the nightcap with three strikeouts.

Kate Colmus was the winning pitcher for West (2-0) in the first game with six strikeouts and three hits allowed. Jenn Hathaway had two hits, a run and a stolen base while Tina Green doubled and scored the winning run.

Rachel Barnes scored the winning run in the nightcap when she doubled in the sixth inning, moved to third on a Colmus bunt and scored off Bilinski's sac fly. Bilinski had two hits in the game and Green made a game-saving dive on defense at second base.

TC West's JV won 4-2 and 7-5 over Manton as Miranda Adamick won both games.

Elk Rapids 6 12
Boyne City 5 0

Elk Rapids erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to edge Boyne City 6-5 in the opener of a Lake Michigan Conference doubleheader.

Jessie Spoor was the winning pitcher. She also had a key two-run double in the fifth. She had two hits in the game.

The Elks (3-1, 2-0) won the nightcap 12-0 on Spoor's no-hitter. Shelby Tulk, Madi Gosselin Sarah Otte and Brandy Spoor all pounded out two hits apiece.

Kalkaska 3 11
Charlevoix 2 3

Kelli Guy singled in the tying run, stole second and then scored on a Jen Spann single in the bottom of the fifth as Kalkaska edged Charlevoix 3-2 in the first of two Lake Michigan Conference games.

Spann pitched a five-hitter, striking out 10. Mindy Hill scored twice for the Blazers (4-0, 2-0).

Spann hurled a four-hitter, striking out six, in an 11-3 win in the nightcap. Guy and Taren Fales finished with two hits. Guy scored four runs, Fales three. Spann drove in three runs.

Grayling 10 7
Roscommon 0 1

Grayling picked up its first wins of the season with a 10-0, 7-1 non-conference sweep against Roscommon.

The Vikings (2-2) took the opener as Joni Binbschatel allowed three hits with 10 strikeouts. At the plate, Makenna Harwood was 3-for-4 with two doubles and Jordan Stephan was 2-for-2 with three stolen bases and two runs.

Sophomore pitcher Andrea Malm collected her first varsity win in the nightcap with three hits and seven strikeouts. Theresa Schreiber was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases while Shalee Miller was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Mason County 3 11
Benzie Central 2 2

Rusty Slimmen pitched Mason County Central to 3-2 and 11-3 wins over Benzie Central.

Gail Newberg had two hits in the opener for Benzie. Alyssa Smith doubled in the nightcap.

BASEBALL

Grayling 13 10
Roscommon 0 5

Riley Zigila pitched a no-hitter and helped his cause at the plate with a three-run homer as Grayling beat Roscommon 13-0 in the opener of a non-conference doubleheader.

Ethan Lewis had three hits in the win while Luke Schneider added two hits and four RBIs.

Grayling took game two 10-5 behind the pitching of Zack Wolcott, who also homered in the game. Jensen Aubry and Taylor DesEnfants chipped in two hits apiece for the Vikings (3-0-1).

Kalkaska 9 1
Charlevoix 3 0

Kalkaska swept past Charlevoix 9-3, 1-0 in Lake Michigan Conference action.

The Blazers (2-1, 2-0 LMC) had 13 strikeouts from Travis Schuba in the opener. He allowed three runs on six hits.

Mason Moses was 1-for-3 with an RBI while Zach Robinson had a two-run single.

Robinson won the nightcap with six hits and three strikeouts.

Grayson Myas scored the game-winning run after singling, stealing second base and eventually scoring on a passed ball.

Coby Herriman was 3-for-3 in the first game for Charlevoix while Clayton Mitchell doubled and scored a run. Mitchell was the losing pitcher but only gave up one earned run.

In the nightcap, Alex Foster took the loss with four strikeouts. Herriman had two hits for the Rayders.

The Blazers play at Boyne City on Friday while Charlevoix hosts St. Francis.

Elk Rapids 1 7

Kolbi Schumaker led Boyne City past Elk Rapids.

The Ramblers won the first game 4-1 and led 8-7 in the fifth inning of the nightcap when it was suspended for darkness. It's unknown if the game will be finished.

Schumaker was 3-for-3 in the first game and was in line to get the win in the nightcap.

For Elk Rapids (0-2), Nick Sizenski was 1-for-2 with an RBI in the opener while Conor Cocking had two hits in the second game and Eric Savage scored three runs.

Forest Area 10 1
Kingsley 5 5

Kingsley came back to win the nightcap 5-1 for a non-conference split with Kingsley.

The Warriors took the opener 10-5.

In the second game, Cody Garey pitched the win for the Stags (2-3) with six strikeouts and two hits. Casey Shoaff led the way at the plate with a two-run single.

Forest Area had four runs and two RBIs from Ron Fall in the opener while Ryan Magee was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Kingsley had two hits from Garey while Zac Baughn and Derrik Steinebach scored a run.

Gaylord SM 8 16
Boyne Falls 4 4

Gaylord St. Mary opened the year with an 8-4, 16-4 sweep of Boyne Falls.

The Snowbirds (2-0) had two hits each from Justin Rutkowski and Gabe Nowicki in the opener while Lucas Butcher was the winning pitcher.

Rutkowski and Phil Spyhalski teamed to pitch the two-hit win in the nightcap. Josh Dobezlewski had three hits, Patrick Switalski had two doubles and four RBIs while Rutkowski and Nowicki each had two hits.

Manton 9 15
TC Christian 2 0

Traverse City Christian dropped a season-opening twinbill to Manton, 9-2 and 15-0.

Peter Mustard had two singles an RBI in the opener for the Sabres while Jon Rudolph contributed a single and RBI.

Christian plays Lake Leelanau St. Mary on Thursday.

Midland Dow 7
TC West 6

Midland Dow rallied for a 7-6 win over Traverse City West on Monday.

The Titans were up 5-3 when starting pitcher Kevin Kreta exited. Kreta went five innings.

Kreta and Brett Kenny had two hits apiece for West.

Manistee 13 4
Mesick 3 3

Manistee swept Mesick 13-3 and 4-3 in a season-opening doubleheader for the Bulldogs.

Mesick, which committed 14 errors in the first game, collected four hits in the opener and five in the nightcap.

Mesick is at Marion on Thursday.

Kingsley JV 0 0

The Traverse City Central freshmen beat Kingsley's JV 5-0, 2-0.

Mitchell Brien pitched the win in the first game with one hit and 11 strikeouts. Joey Corcoran had a double for the Trojans.

T.J. Schepperly was the winning pitcher in the nightcap with nine strikeouts and one hit.
