DETROIT (AP) -- Brad Redford wasn't supposed to win Mr. Basketball.
Then again, Redford and his Frankenmuth teammates have done a lot of things that no one expected this season.
Redford accepted the award on Monday, one day before Frankenmuth takes on Menominee in a Class B quarterfinal. The winner will advance to Friday's semifinals at Michigan State's Breslin Center.
"Tomorrow is huge -- I can't put into words how much it would mean for us to get to the Breslin Center," Redford said. "This is my senior year, and I want to go out on top."
Redford, who is heading to Xavier in the fall, has led the Eagles to the quarterfinals with one of the most remarkable offensive seasons in state history. He demolished the state mark for 3-pointers in a season, hitting 140 and shattering the old record of 116, and his 97.1 percent mark from the free-throw line also is a new record.
In two different stretches this season, he had consecutive free-throw streaks of 102 and 35, the first and fourth longest in state history. The fifth longest, a run of 34, is also Redford's from his sophomore season.
At six feet tall, Redford is Frankenmuth's tallest starter, and is regularly double and triple-teamed by opposing defenses. That hasn't been enough to stop him from averaging 37.2 points a game as the Eagles have gone 23-2.
"Going into this season, we didn't have great expectations," said Frankenmuth coach Tim Crawford. "We thought we might be able to win 13 or 14 games. Then Brad scored 47 points in the first game of the season, and we knew we had something special."
The next thing Crawford knew, his team was 18-0 and his star guard was breaking records every night.
"There's no question that Brad's the most valuable player in the state of Michigan," he said. "There are some great players that were finalists this year, but if you take Brad off our team and put them on, there's no way we are 23-2 and in the state quarterfinals."
Redford narrowly beat the preseason favorite, Saginaw's Draymond Green. Redford finished with 1,402 points to Green's 1,245 in balloting by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.
Green, who played on the same AAU team as Redford for several seasons, led Saginaw to the Class A state title last year, beating 2007 Mr. Basketball Manny Harris's Detroit Redford team in the finals. The Trojans have only lost once this year, and are favored to win a second straight title, but Green may have been hurt by his ejection from an early season game.
Either way, Redford finally got the phone call he was hoping for on Sunday night.
"I tried not to think about it, but I knew I had a chance because of the numbers I was putting up," he said. "Yesterday, I kept calling coach to see if he had heard anything, and he said that as soon as he did, he'd tell me. I think we finally found out about 7:30."
That meant a trip to Detroit for Monday's ceremony, followed by Tuesday's visit to Houghton Lake to take on Menominee.
"We played at Breslin in a holiday tournament," Redford said. "I want to go back for the real deal."
