Basketball Roundup: Titans hold on for win

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Titans are winless no more.

Traverse City West earned its first victory of the season Tuesday with a 57-45 Big North Conference victory over Alpena.

The Titans (1-4, 1-1 BNC) had four players in double digits. Loren Wagner had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Emily Entz had 14 points and seven assists while Alaina Hall and Gaby Muller each chipped in 12 points.

TC West led 20-17 at the half before extending its lead to 13 points in the third quarter. Alpena was able to get back into the game with some key 3-pointers, but the Titans were able to put the game away.

Lauren Borchard had 15 points off three 3-pointers for the Wildcats while Julie Townsend knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points.

The Titans will travel to Cadillac on Friday while Alpena will host Petoskey.

Alpena dropped the TC West freshman to 2-2 on the season with a 57-24 win.

The Titans had six points from Bridget Bernhard and Alexis Zywicki while Emily Corwin pulled down 10 rebounds.

GIRLS HOOPS

Onekama 52
Bear Lake 33

Taylor Hagen led Onekama with 15 points and four steals in a 52-33 victory over Bear Lake.

Stacie Keith and Shirece Revolt added 12 points and three steals each.

Sarah Hilliard led Bear Lake with 12 points and Ashley Crawford had 10.

The Portagers (3-1) host Frankfort on Friday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

TC Christian 54
Boyne Falls 48

Traverse City Christian jumped out to a 21-11 lead after one quarter and maintained the lead from there en route to a 54-48 victory over Boyne Falls.

Scottie Raetz and Nathan Banks each had 18 points to pace TC Christian (2-1). Jake Eikey added eight points, Taehoon Kim seven rebounds and Raetz three steals.

Reggie Fritz had 17 points to lead a balanced attack for Boyne Falls. Travis Smith contributed 11 points while Jared Mathers and Josh Puroll netted 10.

TC Christian, which hosts Leland on Friday, lost 26-24 in the JV game. Ian Newberry had 16 points for the Sabres (0-3).

Gaylord 62
Mt. Pleasant 56

Joe Arnold led a balanced Gaylord attack with 22 points as Gaylord pushed past Mount Pleasant, 62-56.

The Blue Devils, who trailed 13-10 after one quarter, led 28-21 and 40-34 at the other two period breaks.

Lucas Wickert added 14 points and Quinn Woodhouse 10 for Gaylord.

Trey Ziegler poured in 26 points for the Oilers.

Suttons Bay 42
Kingsley 31

Suttons Bay, trailing 11-4 after one quarter, shut out Kingsley in the second quarter and went from there to a 42-31 win in the Northwest Conference opener.

Blake Ibbotson led the way for the Norsemen (3-0) with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Duwan Anderson added 12 points for Suttons Bay, off until after the New Year.

Brian Conrad and Billy Wismer each had 10 points for Kingsley (1-3). Tom Sedlacek added seven rebounds and Conrad three assists.

Gaylord St. Mary 52
Central Lake 50

Austin Lawnichak knocked down a 15-foot jumper from the right wing with 12 seconds left to lift Gaylord St. Mary to a 52-20 win over Central Lake.

A free throw by the Trojans' Guy Meriwether knotted the game up at 50-50 with 34 ticks left.

Lawnichak led the Snowbirds (3-0, 1-0 Ski Valley) with 18 points, while Clay Becker added 11.

Meriwether paced Central Lake with 20 points and Ryan Crawley had 16.

Benzie Central 64
Leland 47

Four players scored in double figures as Benzie Central topped Leland 64-47 for its first win of the season.

Jeremy Stapleton had 17 points for the Huskies (1-1, 1-0 Northwest Conference) while Caleb Moss added 13 points and 15 rebounds. Jeremy Hoxie contributed 12 points and Jacob Moilanen 10 for the Huskies, who play at Charlevoix on Thursday.

Eric Larsen had 15 points, Nate Sneed 12 and Galen Whittaker 10 for Leland (1-2, 0-1). The Comets play at TC Christian on Friday.

Glen Lake 70
Buckley 56

Glen Lake picked up its first win of the season with a 70-56 Northwest Conference win over Buckley.

The Lakers (1-1, 1-0 NWC) will look to earn win No. 2 today at Baldwin in a make-up game from last week.

In Tuesday's win, Matt O'Brien had 28 points and 12 rebounds while Andrew White had 20 points.

Drew Corwin and Josh Ledford each had 15 points for Buckley while Jeff Dreves had 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Frankfort 61
Mesick 56

The third quarter spelled the difference for Frankfort in a 61-56 Northwest Conference win at Mesick.

The Panthers came out of the break tied at 28, but went on a 20-7 run thanks to four 3-pointers. The Bulldogs (2-1, 0-1 NWC) made a run in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get closer than five points.

Wade Luxford had 23 points for Frankfort while Max Banktson chipped in 13 points. Mesick had 18 points and 13 rebounds from Mark Fortelka, Curtis Brown scored 11 points and Cody Simerson had eight assists.

Forest Area 62
Pellston 58

Pellston's 1-3-1 zone gave Forest Area some problems, but the Warriors were able to post a 62-58 triumph in the Ski Valley Conference opener for both teams.

Carl Snyder and Mitch Core each had 17 points for Forest Area (3-0) while Cullen Lane netted 11 points and Tyler Denike nine. Snyder added eight rebounds and three assists and Will Hammerle eight rebounds for the Warriors, who host Johannesburg-Lewiston on Thursday.

Christopher Hass had 22 points and Adam Hamlin seven rebounds for Pellston.

Inland Lakes 75
Mancelona 63

Steven Kolb had 19 points and Kevin Swadling 17 as Inland Lakes topped Mancelona 75-63 in the first Ski Valley Conference game.

Greg Blanco had 32 points, five assists and three steals to lead Mancelona (1-2). Nick Lockman had seven rebounds and Kodi Balhorn six boards for the Ironmen, off until after the Christmas break.

Northport 57
Leelanau School 24

Jason Tropf, Jessie Bressette and Christian Gochez led Northport to a 22-0 spurt to open the game in a 57-24 win over Leelanau School.

Tropf scored eight points in the first quarter run for the Wildcats (2-0), while Bressette and Gochez each had a half dozen.

Tropf finished with 15 points, Bressette 12 and Shane Detweiler added 11 rebounds and Pohai Muller 10 boards.

Par Morgan paced Leelanau School with 11 points and Ronnie Illitch had nine.

Ellsworth 69
East Jordan 49

Ellsworth scored 28 points in the second quarter for a 69-49 win over East Jordan.

The Lancers (3-0) had three 3-pointers in the second quarter from Jared Danbert, who finished the game with 22 points and 10 boards. Tyler Ingalls also had 24 points and 12 rebounds.

Matt Werner and Darryl Bingham each scored 10 points for East Jordan.

Lake Leelanau SM 67
Elk Rapids 60

Lake Leelanau St. Mary led 55-38 after three quarters and held on for a 67-60 win over Elk Rapids.

Dave Pasch led the Eagles with 15 points.

The Elks (1-2) had 24 points from Charlie Hoch while Croc Crandall added 12 points.

TC Prep 75
GT Academy 64

Traverse City Prep held a 16-point halftime lead and held on for a 75-64 win over Grand Traverse Academy.

Prep (2-2) had 33 points from Briar Cornett while Kyle Bramer kicked in 30.

GT Academy was paced by 17 points from Josh Balesh while Kenny Marrow had 12 points.

Manistee Catholic 63
B.R. Crossroads 49

Manistee Catholic improved to 2-0 on the season and in the Western Michigan D League with a 63-49 win at Big Rapids Crossroads.

The Sabers had 19 points, four steals and four assists from Jordan Janowiak while Nathan Miller added 14 points, Christian Ludwig had 12 points and eight rebounds while Nick Doyle kicked in 10 points.

Mason Cty. Central 58
Manton 48

David Soraci's 16 points paced Mason County Central in a 58-48 win over Manton.

Cody Emery's solid 17-point, seven-steal, five-assist game led the Rangers (1-1), Jasper Woodcock added 15 points and Cody Clelland hauled down 11 rebounds.

Wolverine 77
Alba 53

Wolverine improved to 2-0 with a 77-53 win over Alba.

Josh Brush led Wolverine -- which led 42-21 at halftime -- with 17 points and Eric Purgiel and Lance Farkas had 11 each. Bob March led Alba with 15. points.

    For the second hire in a row, Traverse City Central turned to its alumni for a coach. The Trojans brought in Ryan Knudsen to replace Aric Woughter on the varsity girls basketball bench.

  • Norsemen fall short

    Melvindale Academy of Business and Technology started the season ranked No. 1 in Class C.

    The Gators finished No. 1, too, beating Suttons Bay in the Class C state basketball final at Michigan States Breslin Center on Saturday. Melvindale ABT never trailed in putting the final touches on a 26-2 season.

  • Norse reach the end

    There is no tomorrow for Suttons Bay or any of the other seven remaining high school basketball teams in the state of Michigan. State titles will be awarded in four classes today at Michigan States Breslin Center, including the Class C showdown between Suttons Bay (25-1) and Melvindale Academy of Business and Technology (25-2).

    Muskegon Heights junior guard Deontae Hudson was looking to pass the ball to a teammate as the final seconds tolled off the clock in overtime Tuesday. Hudson couldn't find anyone open, so he took the shot himself, a long rainbow of a 3-pointer just before the buzzer sounded.
