Basketball Roundup: Danbert leads Ellsworth

TC Central, West lose league games; Glads bag Elks

ELLSWORTH -- Jared Danbert knows how to fill up a stat sheet.

Danbert posted a triple-double on Thursday night to lead Ellsworth to a 73-53 triumph over Harbor Light Christian in the Northern Lakes opener for both teams.

Danbert finished with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the Lancers (4-0). He also finished with four steals.

Nate Peterson added 20 points and 10 rebounds and Tyler Ingalls 15 points, seven assists and six steals for Ellsworth, which is idle until January. Jarod Steenwyk chipped in 10 points and five steals.

David Klevorn had 11 points and Collin Hewitt 10 for Harbor Light.

BOYS

Cadillac 57
TC West 46

Cadillac evened its Big North Conference record at 1-1 with a 57-46 triumph over Traverse City West.

Ben Simons led the way for the Vikings (2-1) with 21 points, six rebounds and four assists. Jeff Bruggema added 10 points for Cadillac, which returns to action with a 4 p.m. game against Lansing Eastern at the Breslin Center on Dec. 27.

Cadillac led 11-9 after the opening quarter and extended the lead to 23-17 at halftime. The Vikings took a 35-31 advantage into the final period.

John Purdy poured in 24 points for TC West (1-1). Greg Forrester added seven for the Titans, who host Grand Rapids Creston on Saturday in a makeup game. The JV game begins at 1 p.m.

TC West won the JV game by a 54-42 score. Jake Fisher had 12 points and Jack Flynn eight for the Titans (1-1).

Gaylord 65
TC Central 60

Host Gaylord hit key free throws Thursday for a 65-60 Big North Conference win over Traverse City Central.

The Blue Devils (4-0, 2-0 BNC) were 12-for-16 from the line in the fourth quarter, including a run of eight straight.

Quinn Woodhouse had 23 points for Gaylord while Lucas Wickert added 14 points.

Kelly Long had 18 points for the Trojans (1-1, 1-1 BNC) while Doug Burke had 17 points.

In the JV game, Gaylord earned a 65-61 win in triple overtime.

TC Central won the freshmen game 61-29 behind 15 points each from Ben Lewis and Ryan Verschuren.

TC St. Francis 58
Elk Rapids 37

Traverse City St. Francis controlled the boards for a 58-37 Lake Michigan Conference win over Elk Rapids.

The Gladiators (3-0, 1-0 LMC) had a 40-14 advantage rebounding.

Holden Greiner had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five steals for St. Francis, who lost leading scorer Ian Sheldon with a knee injury.

Charlie Hoch had 16 points and six rebounds for the Elks.

East Jordan 60
Kalkaska 52

East Jordan's early lead proved to be enough with a 60-52 Lake Michigan Conference win over Kalkaska.

The Red Devils (3-1) held Kalkaska's John Kasza and Travis Schuba to one field goal in the first half as East Jordan led 26-22 at the break.

Kasza finished with 16 points while Schuba and Buddy Ross each had 15. Kasza and Schuba were a combined 17-for-17 from the free-throw line.

Michael Becker had 14 points for East Jordan while Teddy Snowden had 12 and James Brown added nine points and eight rebounds.

Charlevoix 80
Benzie Central 75

Wes Bryan and Justin Friske each hit the 20-point mark in an 80-75 win over Benzie Central.

Bryan racked up 26 points and 10 rebounds and Friske had 20 points and 12 boards.

Tom Parrish chipped in 10 points and nine assists and Brock Yenglin added nine points and nine rebounds.

Benzie (1-2) was led by John Hoxie (19 points, Caleb Moss (18 points, 15 rebounds) and Jeremy Stapleton (12 points).

Charlevoix (2-1) hosts Grayling today in a varsity doubleheader.

Boyne City 60
Harbor Springs 55

Trever Kruzel's 22 points and 14 rebounds helped Boyne City repel a Harbor Springs comeback attempt in a 60-55 win.

The Rams (2-2) outscored the Ramblers (2-1) 19-11 in the fourth quarter to pull within five after trailing 38-22 at halftime.

Ryan Musser added 12 points and eight rebounds and Tyler Urman had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Josh Boeckman led Harbor with 20 points.

Kingsley 53
Manistee 40

Jordan VanHorn notched a double-double for Kingsley in a 53-40 non-conference win over Manistee.

VanHorn had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Stags (2-3) while Brian Conrad had 10 points and Seth Harrison added nine points and five steals.

Ethan Coppola had 13 points for Manistee.

Gaylord St. Mary 67
Onaway 42

Gaylord St. Mary improved to 4-0 with a 67-42 Ski Valley Conference victory over Onaway.

Clay Becker led the way for the Snowbirds (4-0, 2-0 SVC) with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Aaron Sitkiewicz chipped in 13 points.

Bryan Tucker had 14 points and Chad Curtis 12 for Onaway.

Central Lake 57
Bellaire 48

Central Lake jumped out to a 21-8 lead after the opening quarter en route to a 57-48 Ski Valley Conference victory over Bellaire.

Tyler Strange had 15 points and Ryan Crawley nine for Central Lake (1-2, 1-1 SVC). The Trojans enjoyed a 28-21 rebounding advantage.

Sean Payne paced Bellaire (0-3, 0-1) with 19 points. Steve Eiseler contributed seven rebounds and Brandon Charbonneau six points and six rebounds.

Forest Area 65
Jo'Burg-Lewiston 52

Forest Area moved to 4-0 with a 65-52 win over Johannesburg-Lewiston.

The Warriors had 19 points and 12 rebounds from Mitch Core while Tyler Denike had nine points, six rebounds and three blocks.

Logan Jenkins scored 14 points for the Cardinals.

Onekama 74
Walkerville 35

Five players hit double figures in Onekama's 74-35 rout of Walkerville.

Freshman Adrian Norman led with way with 19 points, followed by Levi Capper (13 points, nine rebounds), Ryan Miller (11 points, 10 rebounds), Skyler Kimple (11 points) and Hunter Slade (10 points, five steals, five assists).

The Portagers (2-0, 2-0 West Michigan D) led 46-21 at halftime.

Wolverine 55
Vanderbilt 33

Wolverine came back from a halftime deficit to beat Vanderbilt 55-33.

The Yellowjackets led 21-19 at the half, but the Wildcats had pulled ahead 37-28 by the end of the third quarter.

Josh Brush led Wolverine (3-0) with 14 points, Lance Farkas added 12 and Justin Evans 10.

Eric Webber's 13 paced Vanderbilt.

Manistee Catholic 69
Mason Co. Eastern 50

Four players scored in double figures as Manistee Catholic improved to 3-0 overall and in the West Michigan D Conference with a 69-50 triumph over Mason County Eastern.

Jordan Janowiak led the Sabers with 18 points. Nick Nisen added 15 points, Nick Doyle 12 and Nate Miller 10.

Garrett Owens finished with eight assists for Manistee Catholic.

Chris Segalstron had 12 points and Stephen Knizacky 10 for Eastern.

GIRLS

Lake Leelanau SM 54
TC Christian 46

A balanced scoring attack led Lake Leelanau St. Mary's to a 54-46 win over Traverse City Christian.

Christy Miller and Tiffany Moore paced the Eagles with 13 points each, while Brooke Fortner added 12.

Christian led 29-25 at halftime, but Lake Leelanau reeled off a 19-10 fourth quarter to post the win.

Mary Raetz led the Sabres (2-3) with 17 points and eight steals, while Jenna Finney added 13 points and Lindsay Kostrzewa had 10 rebounds, four steals and four blocks.

The Eagles play Glen Lake on Monday in TC St. Francis' tournament.

    For the second hire in a row, Traverse City Central turned to its alumni for a coach. The Trojans brought in Ryan Knudsen to replace Aric Woughter on the varsity girls basketball bench.

  • Norsemen fall short

    Melvindale Academy of Business and Technology started the season ranked No. 1 in Class C.

    The Gators finished No. 1, too, beating Suttons Bay in the Class C state basketball final at Michigan States Breslin Center on Saturday. Melvindale ABT never trailed in putting the final touches on a 26-2 season.

  • Norse reach the end

    There is no tomorrow for Suttons Bay or any of the other seven remaining high school basketball teams in the state of Michigan. State titles will be awarded in four classes today at Michigan States Breslin Center, including the Class C showdown between Suttons Bay (25-1) and Melvindale Academy of Business and Technology (25-2).

    Suttons Bay junior Dwuan Anderson said it has always been his dream to play at the Breslin Center. Anderson made that dream come true Tuesday night with a dominant 30 point and 13 rebound performace.

    Muskegon Heights junior guard Deontae Hudson was looking to pass the ball to a teammate as the final seconds tolled off the clock in overtime Tuesday. Hudson couldn't find anyone open, so he took the shot himself, a long rainbow of a 3-pointer just before the buzzer sounded.

    Muskegon Western Michigan Christian senior Evan Bruinsma was unanimously named the Class D Player of the Year by an 11-member Associated Press All-State panel. Other seniors selected for All-State include Ellsworth's Jared Danbert.

    A memorable run for Suttons Bay just picked up a little bit of history. The Norsemen clinched their first regional basketball championship since 1982 on Wednesday with a victory over Mason County Central in the Class C final at Traverse City West.
