Gladiator boys No. 1 in GPA

TC Central, West boys and girls recognized

TRAVERSE CITY -- St. Francis is No. 1 in the state.

Academically, that is, in boys basketball.

The Gladiators posted the state's best GPA -- in all classes -- with a 3.7288.

Ellsworth had the best GPA average in Class D with a 3.6012.

Traverse City Central was second (3.5786) and Traverse City fourth (3.5463) in Class A. Gaylord was honorable mention (3.2320).

Petoskey placed third in Class B (3.5655). Grayling (3.3470) was honorable mention.

Boyne City finished 10th in Class C (3.3578). Suttons Bay (3.0680) earned honorable mention.

Frankfort took fifth (3.4835) and Wolverine 10th (3.3623) in Class D. Gaylord St. Mary (3.097) was honorable mention.

Traverse City Central was the top Class A team in girls basketball with a 3.7844. Traverse City West came in seventh (3.7421).

Benzie Central (3.5542), Cadillac (3.4863) and Manistee (3.340) were honorable mention in Class B.

McBain (3.6155) and Kingsley (3.3374) were among the honorable mention in Class C.

Gaylord St. Mary finished eighth in Class D (3.7202). Onaway (3.6789), Johannesburg-Lewiston (3.5439), Central Lake (3.5151), Ellsworth (3.4228) were honorable mention.

    TC Central hires Knudsen

    For the second hire in a row, Traverse City Central turned to its alumni for a coach. The Trojans brought in Ryan Knudsen to replace Aric Woughter on the varsity girls basketball bench.

  • Norsemen fall short
    SUTTONS BAY VS MELVINDALE ABT

    Melvindale Academy of Business and Technology started the season ranked No. 1 in Class C.

    The Gators finished No. 1, too, beating Suttons Bay in the Class C state basketball final at Michigan States Breslin Center on Saturday. Melvindale ABT never trailed in putting the final touches on a 26-2 season.

    SUTTONS BAY VS BRIDGEMAN

    There is no tomorrow for Suttons Bay or any of the other seven remaining high school basketball teams in the state of Michigan. State titles will be awarded in four classes today at Michigan States Breslin Center, including the Class C showdown between Suttons Bay (25-1) and Melvindale Academy of Business and Technology (25-2).

    Suttons Bay held Bridgman to 20.6 percent shooting from the field at Michigan States Breslin Center. The Norsemen (25-1) will Melvindale Academy of Business and Technology (25-2) for the state title at noon Saturday.

    Basketball Western Michigan Christian vs Buckley

    The Muskegon Western Michigan Christian students started chanting "Back to Breslin" as WMC used its speed as an advantage for a win over Buckley, advancing them to the state semifinals.

    Suttons Bay junior Dwuan Anderson said it has always been his dream to play at the Breslin Center. Anderson made that dream come true Tuesday night with a dominant 30 point and 13 rebound performace.

  • Petoskey falls at horn in overtime

    Muskegon Heights junior guard Deontae Hudson was looking to pass the ball to a teammate as the final seconds tolled off the clock in overtime Tuesday. Hudson couldn't find anyone open, so he took the shot himself, a long rainbow of a 3-pointer just before the buzzer sounded.

    HILLMAN VS LELAND

    Muskegon Western Michigan Christian senior Evan Bruinsma was unanimously named the Class D Player of the Year by an 11-member Associated Press All-State panel. Other seniors selected for All-State include Ellsworth's Jared Danbert.

    Ellisha Crosby capped her high school career with 41 points, 15 rebounds and five assists Saturday as the Traverse City Bulldogs beat Pulaski, Ark. 58-53 to take seventh-place in the national home school basketball tournament.

  • Norsemen win first regional since '82
    SUTTONS BAY VS MASON COUNTY CENTRAL

    A memorable run for Suttons Bay just picked up a little bit of history. The Norsemen clinched their first regional basketball championship since 1982 on Wednesday with a victory over Mason County Central in the Class C final at Traverse City West.
