MANISTEE -- Manistee Catholic captured its first Class D district basketball title in 25 years Friday with a 72-53 win over Manistee Catholic.
The Sabers (20-3) will play Leland in Monday's regional opener at Benzie Central.
Nick Doyle scored 10 of his 19 points and Nick Kolanowski nine of his 21 in the first quarter as Catholic jumped out to a 28-12 lead. Kolanowski's nine points came on three 3-pointers.
"We came out on fire," Sabers coach Dale Edmondson Jr. said. "That was huge."
Bear Lake cut it to 38-29 at half, but the Sabers pushed the cushion back to 16 after three quarters.
Nathan Miller added 12 points and Garrett Owens nine for Catholic. Doyle pulled down 13 rebounds while Owens had four steals and Nick Niesen four assists.
Cody Reed tossed in 14 for Bear Lake. Alex Ringle added 12.
At Leland
Leland 69
Northport 36
Leland earned a return trip to the Class D regionals Friday night with a 69-36 win over Northport in the district finals here.
The Comets (15-8) led 32-12 at half.
Nate Sneed paced Leland with 19 points. Sam Scott added 14 and Galen Whittaker 13.
Jason Tropf topped Northport with 16 points. Alan Holt contributed 11.
At Ellsworth

Ellsworth 46
Central Lake continued the school's magical March by beating Ellsworth 53-46 in a Class D district final.
The victory comes on the heels of the girls success. The girls team won its regional Thursday.
Central Lake and Ellsworth split a pair of games during the regular season. The Trojans led 22-20 at half and 36-34 at half.
Gus Meriwether led the attack with 21 points. Ian Beal added 11.
Jared Danbert topped Ellsworth (17-6), the defending district champ, with 16 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Nate Peterson contributed 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals.
The Lancers shot just 28 percent from the field, including 1-of-17 from beyond the 3-point arc.
At McBain NMC
Buckley 72
Marion 52
For the first time in school history, Buckley's won back-to-back district titles.
The Bears accomplished the feat with a 72-52 win over Marion in the Class D final at McBain NMC.
Drew Corwin's double-double powered the Bears. He finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Josh Ledford added 19 and Zach Hartzell 10. Hartzell also had six steals.
"He was our sparkplug, our MVP," Bears coach Rene LaFreniere Jr. said.
Jeff Dreves pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds.
Buckley led 35-27 at half.
Jared Fredrick's 14 points paced Marion.
Class C
At East Jordan
Boyne City 65
Charlevoix 64
Boyne City won two games during the regular season.
The Ramblers matched that by winning two in the district.
Jay Redman scored 19 points and Nick Young and Caleb Roberts 18 apiece as the Ramblers edged Charlevoix 65-64 for the title.
The Rayders' Ben Myers hit a free throw with eight seconds left to pull his team within one. After a timeout, he missed the second. Charlevoix had three putback attempts, but could not convert.
It was Boyne City's first district crown in 12 years.
"They (Ramblers) played a great game," Charlevoix coach Keith Haske said. "It was just one of those nights."
Keegan LaBlance led Charlevoix, which played without center Bill Ivan, with 19 points. Joe Filipiak and Andrew Plude chipped in 11.
Class B
At Petoskey
Petoskey 68
Cheboygan 51
Petoskey punched its ticket to the Class B regional by beating Cheboygan 68-51.
Cory Starkey led the 21-1 Northmen with 22 points. Trevor Closs had 19 for Cheboygan.
The two teams split a pair of games during the regular season.
Petoskey will play Ludington, which beat Benzie Central 57-49 in the final at Kingsley.
