Bums hitting woes continue

Midwest Sliders post 1-0 win

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City Beach Bums hitting woes continued Friday night.

The Bums collected just three hits, wasting a strong pitching performance by David Nathanson, in a 1-0 Frontier League loss to the Midwest Sliders at Wuerfel Park.

The Beach Bums have scored just one run in their last three games.

Nathanson went the distance, allowing one run on six hits. He struck out a career-high eight.

The Sliders scored the game's only run in the second inning on Clay McCord's two-out RBI double. That brought in Gil Zayas, who reached after he was hit by a pitch.

James Albury tossed six shutout innings in gaining the win. He escaped trouble in the third when Traverse City loaded the bases with no outs. Stephen Douglas flied out to left to apparently tie the game, but Al Barbato, who was on first, was thrown out as he tagged up and moved towards second. The Sliders (16-22) then appealed to third and Andrew Barbaro was called out for leaving the base too early.

Barbaro, Andrew Stafford and Brian Lapin had the Beach Bums (19-21) hits.

Albury improved to 5-1. Nathanson dropped to 1-6.

The series resumes tonight with the Beach Bums wearing special patriotic uniforms for the July 4th game. Brett Bostelman (5-0, 2.27) will start for Traverse City. Jeff Fischer (1-0, 6.00) will get the call for the Sliders.

It will be Military Welcome Home and Armed Forces Appreciation Night at the park. A special pre-game ceremony to honor veterans and active servicemen and women will take place at 6:15.

  • Bums move closer to playoff berth

David Deminsky got a good night’s sleep Thursday. Deminsky was left behind when Traverse City traveled to Rockford for a three-game road trip. Manager Gregg Langbehn knew it would be Deminsky’s turn in the rotation for the important opener of a series against Lake Erie that will determine who goes to the Frontier League playoffs. The TC win forces Lake Erie to have to win the last two games of the series to overtake the Beach Bums for the league’s final playoff spot.

  • Bums go on road looking for sweep

The Beach Bums want to repeat history.
    Recent history.
After winning all six games last week, Traverse City aims to duplicate the feat and clinch a Frontier League playoff spot for the second straight year.
Traverse City heads to play a three-game series against last-place Rockford RiverHawks before returning home to close out the regular season against Lake Erie, the team it's primarily battling for the East Division's second playoff spot.
The Beach Bums trail division leader Joliet by six games with as many contests left. By virtue of winning the season series 7-5 with the Slammers, the Bums technically are still alive for the division title, but they'd need to win six straight and have Joliet lose six in a row to close out the season.
