TRAVERSE CITY — Back on track.
Traverse City ended a two-game losing skid on Tuesday with an 8-5 win over Normal at Wuerfel Park.
Jose Vargas had a big night for the Beach Bums (29-14). He went 4-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs and three runs scored. That included a triple and two home runs, pushing his Frontier League lead to 14 for the season.
The Beach Bums took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning off a Vargas solo homer and then made it 7-2 in the seventh off Vargas' three-run triple and an RBI hit from Chase Burch.
Normal rallied in the ninth inning to make things interesting. Trailing 8-2, the CornBelters added three runs off a Tasel Gomez double, a pass ball and a Trey Manz RBI.
Traverse City's Reid Kelly moved his record to 6-1. He threw eight innings with two earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Scott Dunn gave up the runs in the ninth inning while Nick Capito came in to close out the final two outs and record the save.
The teams play again today at 7:05 p.m. in the annual Fourth of July Celebration at Wuerfel Park. Veterans will be honored before the first pitch and fireworks will take place following the game.
