Crushers claim series, 7-3

Lake Erie's four-run 2nd dooms the Beach Bums

AVON, Ohio — Patrick Norris tripled in three runs in the second inning to spark Lake Erie to a 7-3 Frontier League win over the Traverse City Beach Bums on Friday night.

The liner, which bounced over the head of centerfielder Zack Pace, wiped out a Beach Bums lead. Traverse City had scored three runs in the top of the second on Matt Brown’s RBI single and James Guerrero’s two-run single.

But the Crushers came back with four in the bottom half of the frame, sparked by Norris’ bases-clearing triple, to seize the lead.

Lake Erie added two more runs in the third. Losing pitcher Spencer Shelton (1-3) was tagged with six runs. He gave up four hits and walked four. In all, Traverse City pitchers walked 10 batters.

Paul Fagan (2-4) allowed three runs in 5.1 innings to earn the win for Lake Erie, which took two of three games in the series.

The Beach Bums finished with nine hits, but stranded 11 runners. Brown had three hits and Tom Zebroski two.

Traverse City fell to 17-16 while the Crushers improved to 13-20.

The Beach Bums travel to Washington, Pa., tonight for the start of a three-game series with the Wild Things. A pair of righthanders will square off — Wayde Kitchens for the Beach Bums and Gary Lee for the Wild Things.
