Bums, Nathanson take charge out of ’Bolts

TRAVERSE CITY — A short lightning delay between the fourth and fifth innings didn't take any of the charge out of David Nathanson.

The Traverse City Beach Bums right-hander threw his second complete game of the season as the Bums defeated Windy City 6-2 to kick off an important three-game series with the ThunderBolts.

Lake Erie knocked off last-place Rockford, leaving Traverse City a half game out of the East Division's last playoff spot. But the win over Windy City gave TC a two-game cushion over the ThunderBolts, who are also in contention for the postseason spot.

Nathanson allowed only seven hits in nine frames. He didn't walk a batter and improved his record to 3-2.

Traverse City scored all of its runs in a three-inning stretch.

J.T. Hall's third-inning single brought in Chase Burch, who had four hits on the night. Chris Kay's sacrifice scored Tom Zebroski in the fourth, and then TC broke loose for four runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Zebroski, a two-run hit by Steven Shults and a run-scoring double from Kay.

Zebroski had three hits as the Beach Bums pounded one of the Frontier League's top pitchers, Dustin Williams, for 10 hits and six runs in five innings. Williams -- who is tops the league in strikeouts by a wide margin and is tied atop the victories list -- struck out seven, but walked three.
