Scott Dunn pitched himself into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the 12th inning as the Traverse City Beach Bums defeated first-place Joliet 4-3.
Jose Vargas was all of Traverse City's offense, hitting a pair of two-run homers, including the game-winner in the top of the 12th.
The win pulls Traverse City (42-40) to within six games of the East Division lead and 1.5 games of second-place Lake Erie.
Vargas blasted a two-run homer in the third inning to bring in J.T. Hall, who had singled.
Those were the only runs the Beach Bums would score until the 12th inning, when Vargas did almost the exact same thing. After a Hall single, he belted a two-run homer to put TC up 4-2.
Vargas has 11 home runs on the season for Traverse City, but hadn't driven in a run in his last six games.
David Deminski started the game and went six solid innings, striking out five and giving up five hits and two runs.
Scott Reid added 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and Scott Mueller tossed 2.2 frames of one-hit ball before Dunn came on in the 12th.
Erik Lis singled in a run for the Slammers in the bottom of the 12th, leaving Joliet with runners on first and third. Dunn intentionally walked former Beach Bum Kyle Maunus -- who was 3-for-4 in the game -- to load the bases, then struck out Brandon Peters and enticed Reid Chenworth into a game-ending line-out to Vargas at shortstop.
Hall and Vargas each had two hits for the Bums, as did catcher Chris Kay.
