Joliet slams Beach Bums

Traverse City fell back to the .500 mark with a 7-5 loss to first-place Joliet.

The Beach Bums had the bases loaded in the ninth inning after scoring four runs earlier in the frame, but couldn't quite complete the comeback from down 7-1.

For the second game in a row, Matt Brown -- who had three hits and a stolen base in his previous four at-bats of the game -- was the final out with the tying or winning runs on base. He struck out Saturday and lined out to first base Sunday.

The Slammers won two of three games in the series, and lead Lake Erie by 6.5 games.

The Beach Bums stayed 1.5 games behind Lake Erie by virtue of the Crushers' Sunday loss to Windy City, but the ThunderBolts also passed the Beach Bums in the standings.

Former Beach Bums player Kyle Maunus was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.

David Nathanson (2-2) was tagged for seven hits and five runs in five innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Jeff Cinadr came on for 2.1 innings of one-hit relief work and Scott Reid gave up two runs in the eighth inning.

In addition to Brown, Chase Burch had three hits for TC. Zack Pace and Stephen Shults had two each.

J.T. Hall drove in two runs with a single in the ninth to make it 7-5.

Jake Renshaw picked up the win for Joliet, going five innings and giving up four hits and three walks.

The Beach Bums have today off before hosting last-place Rockford for a three-game set and then bringing in Windy City as part of a six-game homestand. TC then visits Rockford to end the season with a Sept. 2-4 series with Lake Erie, the team they are chasing for the East Division's second playoff spot.
