TRAVERSE CITY — The race in the Frontier League's East Division took an interesting twist Sunday evening.
The Traverse City Beach Bums completed a perfect six-game homestand by beating Windy City 3-1, moving into second-place in the process. Lake Erie (47-42) fell a half-game behind the Beach Bums (48-42) in the wild card race after losing to Rockford 2-0.
Traverse City has six games remaining in the regular season -- three at Rockford, starting Tuesday, and three back home with Lake Erie.
On Sunday, David Deminsky pitched seven shutout innings for the Beach Bums, improving his record to 5-3. Deminsky allowed five hits.
Scott Reid allowed a run in the eighth, but Scott Mueller came in and pitched the ninth for his 20th save. Mueller has a 1.22 ERA.
The Beach Bums got to Windy City starter Matt Jernstad for solo runs in the second, third and fifth innings. In the second, Matt Brown singled in Jose Vargas. A one-out triple by Greg Burns and an RBI double down the rightfield line by Chase Burch accounted for the run in the third. Burns singled and Vargas doubled into the left field corner to bring in the third run.
That's all the scoring the Beach Bums pitchers would need.
Traverse City had 10 hits in the game, three by Vargas and two apiece by Burns and Burch.
The Beach Bums will send 10-game winner Bryan Banes to the mound Tuesday at Rockford. The Beach Bums are 5-4 against the RiverHawks this season, 1-2 at Rockford.
The three-game series with Lake Erie at Wuerfel Park will get underway Friday.
