TRAVERSE CITY — Chase Burch drove in two runs and three Traverse City pitchers made that stand Sunday evening in a 2-1 Frontier League win over London at Wuerfel Park.
Burch doubled in Jose Vargas, who had walked, in the first inning. The two-out double was Burch's 217th hit as a Beach Bum, tying Steve Young as the team's career leader.
In the third, he hit into an unusual fielder's choice to drive in what proved to be the winning run. With Kyle Eveland on third and Brian Heere on second with two outs, Burch grounded to third baseman Stephen Cardullo. Instead of throwing to first, he waited to tag Heere, who was heading toward third. Heere, however, reversed direction and forced a rundown, allowing Eveland to scoot in from third.
David Deminsky pitched six innings to gain the win, allowing one run on five hits. He improved to 4-1. Scott Dunn and Scott Mueller closed it out with a combined three innings of hitless relief. Mueller notched his eighth save in a game that took just over two hours.
Both teams finished with five hits. Heere led the Beach Bums with two hits.
The win pushed the East Division-leading Beach Bums to a league-best 23-12 record.
Traverse City will look to sweep the three-game set tonight. Brooks Belter (3-0, 3.48) takes the mound for Traverse City. Matt Schimpf (2-1, 2.84) will get the call for London.
