Pitching propels Bums, 4-2

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Beach Bums opened a six-game homestand at Wuerfel Park on Tuesday night with a 4-2 Frontier League win over the Rockford RiverHawks.

Scott Dunn (7-3) pitched 6 2/3 innings to earn the win. He allowed two runs on eight hits. Scott Reid and Scott Mueller closed it out with hitless relief.

The Beach Bums, now 43-42, scored three runs in the fourth inning and never looked back. Tom Zebroski contributed an RBI single in that frame while third baseman Stephen Shults belted a two-run homer -- his first as a Beach Bum. Shults was acquired in a trade with Florence just over a week ago.

Traverse City scored its final run in the sixth on an RBI single by Jeff Flagg.

The RiverHawks finally got to Dunn in the seventh on a two-run homer by Jeremy Richter, but the Beach Bums bullpen took over from there. Reid and Mueller retired the last seven batters in order. Mueller picked up the save.

Brett Scarpetta (6-6) took the loss for Rockford.

Flagg had two of Traverse City's seven hits.

The series continues tonight with David Deminsky taking the mound for the Beach Bums and Joe Scumaci for Rockford.
