---- — FLORENCE, Ky. — Jim Jacquot belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday night as the Florence Freedom stunned the Traverse City Beach Bums 5-4 in a Frontier League game.
It was Traverse City's first loss in the young season and it prevented the Beach Bums from the sweeping the three-game series.
Traverse City had rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth on a Jeff Flagg two-run homer. Chase Burch had led off the inning with a walk.
The Beach Bums brought in All-Star closer Scott Mueller in the bottom half of the ninth. He walked David Harris and then Jacquot hit an offering over the left field fence to end it.
Bennett Whitmore pitched a strong game for Traverse City, which now has two days off before taking on Joliet on Tuesday. Whitmore went 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on one hit. He left the game with a 2-1 lead on a hot 87-degree night in Kentucky.
The Beach Bums scored those two runs in the fourth when Jose Vargas smacked a solo home run — his second in two nights — and Flagg followed two batters later with a drive over the center field fence.
Florence scored one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 3-2 lead. That held until Flagg's second home run of the game in the ninth.
Flagg and Sean Gusrang led the Beach Bums with two hits apiece.
Stephen Shackleford picked up the win for Florence.
Tuesday's game starts at 8:05 in Joliet.
