Holbrook services are this weekend

BEULAH -- Funeral services for Michigan State Police Sgt. Melvin Holbrook are scheduled for this weekend.

Services with the state police honor guard are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the auditorium at Benzie Central High School. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.

Visitation will be held at the school today from 5 to 8 p.m.

Holbrook, who worked as a desk sergeant at the Traverse City post, was shot and killed inside his home in Benzie County's Homestead Township at about 1 a.m. Monday. His wife, Joni K. Holbrook, is charged with an open count of murder and remains in jail without bond.

New fire department to open in Benzie

The Inland Township Fire Department will open its doors April 1 at 19668 Honor Highway in Bendon. It will be a volunteer, on-call department with 15 firefighters and another 10 in training.

Joni Holbrook sent back to jail

Joni Holbrook's family wept and embraced as a bailiff prepared to lead her from a Benzie County courtroom to a jail cell. Holbrook, 48, is charged with an open count of murder in the death of her husband. She had been free on bond since October, but headed back to jail Tuesday after a brief hearing before Benzie Circuit Judge James M. Batzer.

Gwen Frostic shop may get new owner soon

Gwen Frostic's historic and much-visited print shop could soon be under new ownership. The once-popular business and tourist attraction closed in October after Honor State Bank foreclosed on the property, leaving customers and visitors uncertain over its future.
