FRANKFORT -- Frankfort is in the movies. And the movie is in Frankfort.
A special screening of "Youth in Revolt," a movie filmed in the area in June 2008, is scheduled for Dec. 29 at the Garden Theater. The movie won't be released until next month.
"We've been working on it for over a year," said Rick Schmitt, co-owner of the newly restored theater. "I guess persistence was a factor."
The "pre-screening" is scheduled for 8 p.m. with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available beginning Saturday.
Schmitt encourages movie-goers to check the Web site, www.frankfortgardentheater.com, for ticket availability. There's a limit of two tickets per adult and no will-call tickets will be available. Tickets must be picked up at the theater, 301 W. Main St.
Many scenes from "Youth in Revolt" were filmed in Frankfort, Empire and Lake Leelanau. Schmitt said cast and crew "filled up the town, as far as lodging." Main Street was used in scenes, as were the Crescent Bakery, Hull's and a laundromat, Schmitt said.
The film is a coming-of-age comedy starring Michael Cera. It's based on a book of the same name by C.D. Payne. "Youth in Revolt" tells the story of Nick Twisp, a teen with a taste for the finer things in life, who falls in love with the free-spirited Sheeni Saunders, played by Portia Doubleday, while on a family vacation. Outside forces try to keep the two apart and, with the girl's encouragement, Nick adopts a rebellious alter ego, Francois.
