Titans, Trojans open with bowling victories

Cook, Vreeland help TC teams kick off league

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Great Northwest High School Bowling Conference kicked off its 10th season Saturday at Timber Lanes with nine area schools and more than 20 teams competing.

The conference is split into two sections -- Division I-II and Division III-IV with teams competing in each for the Gerard Schwartz Memorial Trophies.

To celebrate the 10th season an All-Decade team will be announced on Jan. 2nd during the annual Holiday Singles Tournament.

In the boys division, defending champion Traverse City West Green started 1-0 by beating St. Francis 22-8. Jacob Cook shot 422 (202, 220) to lead the win while Zak Edwardson pitched in 370. Mike Bork rolled a 435 (213,222) for the Gladiators.

Traverse City Central beat Bellaire 19-11. Central's Christian Vreeland's 416 (213, 203) led both teams. Jeff Odom rolled a 378 series for Bellaire.

Glen Lake beat Traverse City West Gold 16-14. Glen Lake's Zach Gordon's 368 led both teams. Sam Tater shot 188 in the loss.

Elk Rapids beat Traverse City Christian 18-12 Justin Velliquette's 366 led the Elks and Joey Perrault rolled a 192 to assist. The Sabres' Andy Tuck shot 178 in the loss.

Benzie moved to 1-0 by beating Traverse City Prep 291/2-1/2. Cody Bower led both teams with a 325 series.

In the girl's division, Traverse City West Green beat St. Francis 30-0. Jessie Thomas rolled a 356 to lead the Titans while Ashley Parent shot a 173 game for West.

The Lady Trojans beat Bellaire 29-1. Nicole Lally shot a 379 series (203) and Katie Vreeland rolled a 196 game in the win.

The Titan Gold beat the vacant team 19-11. Breanna Bitely had a 183 in the win. The Titan B team beat Glen Lake 17-13. Benzie topped the Trojan B Team 29-1. Ashley Stain led both teams with a 282 series.

In the JV division, the Trojans beat the Titans 27-3. CJ Koinis (218) and Jordan Harnick (205) led the Trojans. St. Francis beat Elk Rapids 25-5. Bellaire beat the vacant 25-5.

    It was a relaxing regional for Brian Bannasch. At least compared to last year. That's when his team won the Division 3 boys regional bowling title at Timber Lanes by one pin over Mason County Eastern. The Hurons won it when Mason County Eastern's anchor failed to convert on a spare in the 10th frame.

    Neither snow nor treacherous roads could keep Nikki Kauss from her appointed round Friday morning. The Ewen-Trout Creek junior -- with her mother, Kathy, behind the wheel -- spent 10 hours traveling snow-covered roads late Thursday night and early Friday morning to make it to the start of the Division 3 bowling regional at Timber Lanes.

Traverse City West's boys won their fourth straight GNBC title while TC Central's girls won the league crown for the second straight time in the regular season finale at Timber Lanes.
