TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City West defeated Alpena 4-3 in overtime to avoid a loss that could have cost the Titans their third straight Big North Conference title.
Luke Gerding's rebound of a Nate Allgaier shot in overtime gave the Titans the victory. Vinnie Pietrangelo was able to hold the puck in the zone and also picked up an assist.
John Bracken scored all three Alpena goals, putting the Wildcats up 1-0 in the first, evening the score at 2-2 and then sending the game into overtime with a 6-on-5 goal with 50 seconds left in regulation.
The Titans came back in the second on a pair of Eric Rivard goals. Shane Totten assisted on both, and Andy Bezotte and Jake Nickerson also picked up helpers.
Totten put West up 3-2 just 42 seconds into the third on a power-play goal from Anthony Fernandez and David Hanrahan assists.
Benn Overholt made 18 saves for the Titans (11-6, 7-1).
West has two BNC games remaining -- a rescheduled Feb. 18 date at Cadillac and Feb. 20 at Alpena.

Gaylord killed off a late penalty to hold on for a 2-2 tie with No. 3-ranked Marquette.
Kyle Eckert and Matt Zaremba scored for the Blue Devils (6-9-2). Justin Kelly and Brennen Borowiak picked up assists.
Marquette (12-1-1) hasn't lost since the first game of the season. The Redmen won 5-4 on Friday night.
Marquette's Jake Robinson scored with 38 seconds left in regulation on a 6-on-4 power play after Gaylord led 2-1 much of the game.
Carey Taylor was in net for Gaylord.

Eric Larsen knocked down a 3-pointer with 30 left to give Leland a one-point lead it wouldn't relinquish as the Comets topped Buckley 61-58.
Paul Jetton added a pair of free throws to ice the game.
Galen Whittaker led Leland (7-4, 4-3 Northwest) with 16 points and 10 rebounds, Nate Sneed also had 16 points and Larsen finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Ben Fellows added eight points and 13 boards.

Manistee Catholic Central topped McBain Northern Michigan Christian 73-45, setting up a big league face-off with Mason County Eastern.
Manistee CC (10-3, 8-2 Western Michigan D League) faces off with the Cardinals at home Tuesday. Both teams have two losses in the league, trailing one-loss Onekama by a single game in the standings.
Jordan Jonowiak scored 24 points in Saturday's win and Garrett Owens added 18. Nick Niesen and Nick Doyle had 10 each for the Sabers.
Nathan DeKam had 12 for McBain NMC (3-6, 3-3 Highland) and Dale Dick scored 11.

Traverse City St. Francis withstood a late charge by East Jordan to win 49-44.
The Gladiators led 35-20 after three quarters.
Jamie Bott paced St. Francis (8-5, 6-2 Lake Michigan) with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Chelsea Deisler added 12 points and three steals.
Grace Howes had 12 and Maribeth Poindexter 11 for the Red Devils.
In the junior varsity contest, St. Francis won 47-5. Keller Greiner led the Glads (12-1, 7-1) with 12 points.
TC Bulldogs win pair
The Traverse City Bulldogs won a pair of games on Saturday to finish off an undefeated regular and earn a top seed in the home school regionals next week.
The Bulldogs (14-0) reeled off a 20-5 second-quarter run to pull away in a 53-23 win over Hudsonville, and then beat Kalamazoo 55-44. They have a first-round bye in regionals, held in Cincinnati on Feb. 5-7.
Ellisha Crosby scored 22 points and added 13 rebounds and five steals in the win over Hudsonville, with Ellen Musser adding 11 points and Rachel Crosby chipping in nine rebounds.
Against Kalamazoo, Ellisha Crosby had 20 points and 13 rebounds, Musser scored 13 points, Rachel Crosby added eight rebounds and Ashley Larson had seven baords.
The Bulldogs honored seniors Krystina Hockin and Musser on senior night.
WRESTLING
Gaylord wins Northern Michigan Championships
Host Gaylord won the 25-team Northern Michigan Championships on Saturday.
The Blue Devils posted 235 team points to top runner-up Kingsley's 189.5. Ogemaw Heights, Pinconning, Roscommon and Traverse City West rounded out the top six.
The Titans had six placers, led by runners-up Brad Gillison (145) and Lerone Howard (152). Both were 3-1.
Heavyweight Matt Town and 130-pounder Tyler Hyde were third with 4-1 records, Dee Kirksey posted a fifth-place finish at 160 and 140-pounder Jon Hoye was seventh with a 3-1 day.
Manton, which finished 12th, had four placers.
Davis Ashley (112) was fourth, going 3-2 with three pins, and Corey Webb (145) was also fourth, notching two falls. Scott Babb (119) and Greg Stahl (285) were both eighth.
Forest Area's Justin Gordon won the 171-pound class with a 4-0 record, breezing through with three first-period pins before a 6-3 victory in the finals. Gordon is 31-0 this season.
Eight Trojans place in Portage Central Invite
Traverse City Central had eight wrestlers place as the team finished sixth out of eight in the Portage Invitational.
Kyle McLachlan led the way with a second-place finish at 171 pounds, running his season record to 11-3 with a 3-1 day that included three pins. Connor Kerndt also placed second, going 4-1 at 103 pounds to improve to 30-11.
Max Walker won his consolation final in triple overtime on a takedown for a 4-2 decision. He had two pins among his three wins for the day, finishing third at 189 pounds. His is 10-6 this year.
Kaleb Barrientoz was fourth at 215, notching two pins, while Zack Roberge was fourth at 152 with one fall. Roberge is 23-6 on the season.
Paco Diaz was fifth at 125, heavyweight Brandon Beger was fifth and 112-pounder Justin Ray finished sixth.

Great Northwest titles coming down to the wire
The Great Northwest High School Bowling Conference will come down to the wire this Saturday as three teams (Traverse City West, Traverse City Central and Traverse City Christian) in the boy's Division and two teams (TC West and TC Central) may very well bowl for the Gerard Schwartz Memorial Trophies.
A position round awaits the two public school teams in both divisions. The Titans (10-1) will meet the Trojans (9-2) in the boy's group and it's the same match-up in the girl's, but TC West and Central are tied with 10-1 records in the division.
Division 3 No. 9-ranked TC Christian (9-2) will bowl against TC St. Francis (7-4) due to the total pins tiebreaker with the Trojans. Trojan and Sabre wins would force a three-team, two-game Baker roll-off for the Conference Season Championship.
In this weekend's meets the Titans moved to 10-1 by beating their B team 30-0 and Benzie Central 28-2. James Fuqua shot a 444 series in the morning and Aaron Johnson a 410 against the Huskies. Cody Bower rolled a 367 series for the Huskies.
The Trojans beat St. Francis 22-8 and Bellaire (5-6) 29-1. Steve Tate's 444 and Christian Vreeland's 419 series led them versus the Gladiators. Michael Bork rolled a 196 for the Gladiators in the loss. Jeff Odom shot a 378 for Bellaire in their match.
TC Christian beat Benzie (1-10) 29-1 as Brian Benson had a 233 game in the win. Jeremy Radtke led the Sabres with a 402 series over the vacant team in the afternoon. St. Francis got a win in the afternoon over TC West AA (5-6) 16-14. Bork again led St. Francis with a 209 game. Eric Johnson (196) led the Titans.
Glen Lake and Elk Rapids finished up the day both at 5-6. The Lakers beat the West AA team 19-11 in the morning, but lost to the Elks in a two-game roll-off after their match ended tied at 15. Wyatt Smith led the Lakers with a 398 series. The Elks' Jacob Way rolled a 203 in the win over the Lakers. The Elks beat their B team 30-0 in the morning.
In the girl's division, the Trojans beat TC West 221/2-71/2. Central's Nicole Lally's 427 was tops on the team. West's Jessie Thomas rolled a 188.
TC Central (10-1) then beat Benzie (4-7) 27-3. Katie Vreeland's 196 game led both teams. TC West A moved to their 10-1 record by beating St. Francis (1-10) 30-0. It was Thomas again leading the Titans with a 198 game.
Glen Lake split its matches on the day to move to 6-5. The Lakers lost to Benzie in the morning 16-14 but beat TC West AA (4-7) 20-10 in the afternoon. Katie Drzewiecki led the Lakers over the Titans with a 179 game.
The Position Round will begin at 11 a.m. at Timber Lanes this Saturday. The Conference will then hold their season-ending tournaments the following week.
