TRAVERSE CITY – Rainy weather doesn’t seem to be keeping city voters from voting booth.
More than 3,000 city voters cast ballots by 3 p.m. Tuesday, city Clerk Benjamin Marentette said following a mid-day check of the city’s 10 voting precincts. City voters cast 3,014 ballots, a turnout of just over 25 percent which already exceeds the nearly 23 percent voter turnout recorded two years ago. The totals include 1,134 absentee ballots already received. The city has a total of 11,759 voters.
“I’m guessing we’re going to get close to 40 percent,” Marentette said of his estimates for total voter turnout.
Total voter turnout for the 2009 election was 2,531 voters, representing 22.78 percent of the eligible voters. Turnout in the 2007 city election reached 39.1 percent.
