TRAVERSE CITY - Road conditions are already treacherous throughout northern Michigan this morning due to an invading winter storm that is expected to produce a foot of snow or more in spots, followed by very strong winds on Friday.
"The well-advertised winter storm is underway," said Keith Berger, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gaylord. "Conditions will deteriorate throughout the day."
Most school children are enjoying a snow day today. Only a handful of schools are operating on half days.
"The real story Friday is going to be the winds," Berger said. "Forty mile per hour gusts, with gusts as high as 50. Not a ton of additional snowfall, but what has fallen will be blowing and drifting."
