TRAVERSE CITY — Carly Lewis’ family today identified the suspect in the girl’s slaying as Robert Jensen Schwander, 17, of Traverse City.
And local defense attorney Clarence Gomery this morning said he’s representing Schwander, who is expected to be charged with murder today for killing Carly.
Carly’s body was discovered Tuesday evening, buried in sand at a Traverse City public works yard. The suspect confessed to killing the girl Tuesday afternoon after taking a state police-administered polygraph examination in Grayling, Traverse city police said.
Carly was to meet Schwander at Glen’s Market on East Eighth Street about the time she disappeared on June 2 about 6 p.m.
Carly Lewis’ mother, Susie Lewis, told the Record-Eagle this morning that police told her Schwander was arrested and jailed after confessing to killing her daughter.
Police believe the suspect killed Carly in a shack off Beitner Street near Woodmere Avenue shortly after the arranged meeting at Glen’s. He moved the girl’s body two days later to the city public works yard and buried her in a sand pile, they said.
Prosecutors have yet to charge Schwander with a crime.
