Old Mission wineries win international awards
Chateau Grand Traverse takes best of class-silver honor at event
TRAVERSE CITY — Two Old Mission Peninsula wineries made a splash on the world stage with awards in the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition.
Chateau Grand Traverse winery won a Best of Class-Silver and two bronze medals while Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery garnered three bronze medals, honors unveiled Tuesday at the London International Wine & Spirit Fair, which continues through Thursday.
"This is one of our top awards," Chateau Grand Traverse winemaker Sean O'Keefe said. "When you go against the very top wines in the world, it's really significant."
The winery's Best of Class entry is its Lot 49 Riesling 2008, noted by show judges for "aromas of cantaloupe skin, white flower and lime peel (that) stimulate the palate for this rich Riesling from Michigan ... the length is substantial."
Chateau Grand Traverse also won bronze medals for a Dry Riesling 2008 and a Whole Cluster Riesling 2008. O'Keefe said they were part of an excellent vintage that resulted from ideal growing conditions two seasons ago.
"It just brought wines a beautiful balance," he said. "Everything was just right for white wines."
Brys Estate won a bronze for a Gewurztraminer 2008, and its Dry Ice Icewine 2007. It also won bronze in the Red Wine competition for its '07 Artisan Pinot Noir.
"Normally I wouldn't be too excited about a bronze medal, but this is special," Brys State vintner and estate manager Coenraad Stassen said. "It's the cream of the crop ... the 'Who's Who' of the wine world will enter this."
The competition dates to 1969 and is considered among the world's top wine and spirit awards. It receives more than 7,000 entries from 80-plus countries. The wines go through a two-stage evaluation process that includes blind testing by judges, and a chemical and microbiological analysis at its headquarters in Surrey in the United Kingdom. It has separate competitions for the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
"This is a big honor to be recognized in an international competition," said Eileen Brys, co-owner of Brys Estate. "It's a good thing for Traverse City."

Feds fail to use land for solar power
An Associated Press examination of U.S. Bureau of Land Management records and interviews with agency officials shows that the BLM operated a first-come, first-served leasing system that quickly overwhelmed its small staff and enabled companies, regardless of solar-industry experience, to squat on land without any real plans to develop it.

No Michigan state fair this year
The Michigan State Fair had been a state tradition for 160 years and held at Eight Mile and Woodward, within Detroit city limits, since 1905. But the fair had been running deficits and needed $360,000 from the state in 2008 to cover losses. Fewer than 220,000 people passed through last year. At its peak in 1966, the fair drew 1 million.
