Bluberry council to hold elections

TRAVERSE CITY -- The U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council is electing representatives for state council member and alternate positions on its Promotion, Research and Information Order.

Voting begins April 26 and continues for a five-week voting period. Producers of 2,000 pounds or more of cultivated blueberries in the U.S. in 2009 are eligible to vote. The council will mail ballots to blueberry growers in Michigan who received nomination applications earlier this year. Ballots also are available on the council's Web site at www.blueberry.org, and by contacting the council office at (916) 983-0111.

Ballots must be submitted by the close of business on May 31.

Farmers: Connect with consumers

TRAVERSE CITY -- Local farmers can learn the best ways to connect with consumers at an upcoming workshop.

Michigan Land Use Institute will host a free seminar to help growers better reach shoppers, restaurateurs and others, with panelists to discuss various marketing options.

The workshop will be March 30 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Station, 6686 S. Center Highway in Leelanau County. The seminar is free, though advance registration is appreciated.
