Associations

n Shelly K. Bedford of Traverse City has been appointed to the Board of Directors for the Michigan Economic Development Foundation-- Certified. Bedford is a tax partner at Dennis, Gartland and Niergarth of Traverse City.

Certification

n Frontier Computer Corp. of Traverse City has completed the requirements to become a Microsoft Certified Partner.

Expansion

n The Inman Company, a Traverse City-based residential and commercial interior design firm, is expanding into the Chicago market. President Shane Inman is certified by the National Counsel for Interior Design Qualifications and holds a professional membership with the American Society of Interior Designers and the International Interior Design Association. He is also an adjunct professor of interior design for Michigan State University.

New business

n Rick Lannin recently took over management of the former Northwood's Cafe, opening a new restaurant, the M-22 Cafe Arcadia at 17201 M-22 in Arcadia. The cafe serves breakfast and lunch, 7 a.m.-2 p.m. daily, in addition to a walk-up window during the summer months. Take-out and catering are also available; call 889-0290.

New Web site

n Wyant Computer Services, a Traverse City technology and computer services firm, has launched a new Web site at www.gowyant.com. The site was developed by LindyLazar Marketing Communications, a local branding and advertising company in Traverse City.

n Tilestone Imports of Traverse City lauched a new Web site at www.tilestoneimports.com allowing users to browse hundreds of tile installations by room and application. It was designed by Cindy Jurik Graphic Design of Traverse City.

Partnership

n Cadillac Mortgage has partnered with Amerifirst Financial, a Michigan-based mortgage lender. Service will remain local through Cadillac Mortgage's Candice Vickery, while adding Amerifirst services such as 100 percent financing, FHA and Rural Development loans, reverse mortgages and conventional loans and in-house underwriting.

Personnel

n Jim Hills III was hired by The Honor State Bank as a mortgage originator. He's worked more than 20 years in sales and finance, primarily in retail automotive management, and has a degree from Michigan State University. He lives in Long Lake Township and will be responsible for loans in the Traverse City, Lake Ann, Buckley and surrounding areas.

n Award-winning kitchen designer Deborah Mahon has joined Architectural Elements of Michigan. With 30 years experience in the building industry in commercial and residential custom cabinetry, furniture and residential design, Mahon will provide design services, drawings and specifications for kitchens and baths.

n Wyant Computer Services has named Janice Wyant the general manager as well as vice president. Victor Geha is moving to the position of vice president of Sales. Larissa Chmielewski-Ellis was hired as the new operations manager.

Recognition

n Hazelnut Kids of Traverse City has been named a Top 10 finalist for the People's Choice Green Business of the Year award by Green America. Voting is open until Oct. 8 at www.greenamericatoday.org/greenbusiness/peopleschoice/.

n Mari McCloskey, accounting assistant, is celebrating her 30th anniversary with TBA Credit Union. Starting her career as a teller, McCloskey was soon promoted to accounting, where her duties include balancing daily and monthly general ledger accounts, answering member phone inquiries, and researching special projects.

n Classic Instruments, an aftermarket automotive manufacturer based in Boyne City, has been named to the Inc. Magazine list of top 5,000 fastest growing companies in America for the second consecutive year.

n George F. Bearup, an attorney with the Traverse City office of Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge, was named to the 2009 Michigan Super Lawyers list, under the category Estate Planning & Probate.

n Chateau Chantal has been named one of The Top 10 Wine Country Inns in the United States by GAYOT.com, an Internet guidebook to hotels, wine, spas, movies, automobiles, cookbooks, fashion, aviation and contemporary culture.

n George Thompson of Thompson O'Neil & VanderVeen in Traverse City was named one of the Top Lawyers in Michigan by Super Lawyers magazine.

  • No Michigan state fair this year

    The Michigan State Fair had been a state tradition for 160 years and held at Eight Mile and Woodward, within Detroit city limits, since 1905. But the fair had been running deficits and needed $360,000 from the state in 2008 to cover losses. Fewer than 220,000 people passed through last year. At its peak in 1966, the fair drew 1 million.
